HDS-LEE PI and FZJ atmospheric scientist Prof. Astrid Kiendler-Scharr attended the 27th World Climate Change Conference and was lead author of the chapter on short-lived climate pollutants in the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

HDS-LEE supervisor Dr. Anne Caroline Lange reviewed together with researchers at IEK-8 previous estimates of the number of sources of air pollutants commissioned by the Federal Environment Agency. The results of the studies are an important tool for identifying measures to improve air quality.

The HIDA Trainee Network is a Helmholtz-wide exchange program for doctoral and post-doctoral researchers whose research has a strong connection to (applied) information or data sciences. The Helmholtz Information & Data Science Academy (HIDA) financially supports up to three-month long research stays at another Helmholtz Center. Our goal is to spark collaborations between the centers and build an interdisciplinary community of data scientists.

MiBioLab, one Spin-off linked to HDS-LEE, gets further funding as an Helmholtz Innovation Lab with the aim to develop an automated microbioreactor platform to accelerate the development of sustainable bioprocesses.

The large-scale experiment AgraSim is put into operation soon at FZJ. In this way, scientists around Prof. Nicolas Brüggemann expect to gain insights into the effects of climate change on crops.

HDS-LEE supervisor Dr. Katharina Nöh is involved in the project to create an Integrated Early Warning System for Local Recognition, Prevention, and Control for Epidemic Outbreaks (LOKI). The aim of LOKI is to provide the local health authorities (LHA) with a platform for early detection, prevention, and mitigation of epidemics with pandemic potential.

Christian Gerloff will participate in the HIDA summer exchange program with the Data Science Research Center at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (DSRC@BGU) in Be’er Sheva Israel. He will work on a six-week-long project together with data scientists at BGU. In his project, an interdisciplinary team from HDS-LEE and DSRC@BGU examines geometric deep learning on large MRI datasets to enhance the classification of brain networks for potential future biomarkers.

EuroHPC JU, the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking, has selected Forschungszentrum Jülich – a partner in Germany’s Gauss Centre for Supercomputing – to operate the first next-generation European supercomputer. The supercomputer is set to be the first in Europe to surpass the threshold of one trillion calculations per second.

HDS-LEE PI Prof. Holger Hoos was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship as a pioneer in automated configuration and in the selection and performance prediction of algorithms for challenging problems in artificial intelligence.

Prof. Martin Grohe, HDS-LEE PI and head of the Chair of Computer Science 7 (Logic and Theory of Discrete Systems), was awarded with the ERC (European Research Council) Advanced Grant. The goal of his ERC project is to develop an overarching theory of graph similarity and to demonstrate its applicability to practical problems.

A new study on a receptor variant of Oxytocin,- by HDS-LEE PI Dr. Mercedes Alfonso-Prieto and her team together with researchers at the University of Regensburg,- provides new insights into the cellular origin of the autism disorder. The findings provide a better understanding why nasal sprays with oxytocin are not always helpful to treat autistic patients and they point to alternative strategies that could lead to new therapies in the long term.

HDS-LEE PI Prof. Astrid Kiendler-Scharr presented the topic: "How Climate Change Is Calculated" that refers to the Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to meteorologists Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann.

HDS-LEE doctoral researcher Johannes Kruse and his PI Prof. Dirk Witthaut published a paper where they investigated power fluctuations in different power grids and tried to find the reasons with the help of AI.

HDS-LEE PI Prof. Giulia Rossetti gets funding for her Corona research by VolkswagenStiftung to develop therapies to prevent severe lung disease.

DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) offers twice a year the Networking Tour in Artificial Intelligence, where they select a group of outstanding young international researchers to visit the German hotspots in artificial intelligence. The main goal is to connect them to the German research community to set the base for new collaborations, extend their network, and to initiate concrete career opportunities. HDS-LEE will participate in this tour on April 30. Registration is now open.

The team headed by HDS-LEE PI Prof. Giulia Rossetti found a method to predict more precisely which molecules inhibit “Mpro”, the main protease of SARS-CoV-2 by using the supercomputer at FZJ. These new findings could be helpful in finding a cure for corona virus disease.
